Four FBR officials, traffic police officer killed in DI Khan firing

Five people, including four Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials and a traffic police officer, were killed in separate firing incidents in Dera Ismail Khan (DIK) on Tuesday, District Police Officer (DPO) Ziauddin said.

The firing took place at Bhatti Pump on University Road, within the jurisdiction of University Police Station, at around 11:40am. Rescue 1122 media coordinator said its control room received information about the firing at Bhatti Pump and immediately dispatched emergency teams to the scene.

The rescue teams recovered the bodies of four people killed in the incident and began shifting them to DHQ Hospital, the coordinator said.

"In a separate incident, a highway patrol mobile came under fire at Gulistan Chowk on the DIK bypass, killing its driver and injuring two others," DPO Ziauddin said.

The deceased driver was identified as Habib, and the mobile in-charge, Subhan, and another constable were injured in the attack. The injured and the deceased were being shifted to the trauma centre, police said.

Following the incident. three officials were suspended, with Dera Ismail Khan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Syed Ashfaq Anwar directing them to report to the police lines. The suspended officials were Sub-Inspectors Ghulam Qasim and Ismatullah and FC official Asghar Ali, while charge sheets would also be issued against all three.

Separately in Bannu, two terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire with police in Feroz Fateh Khel, within the jurisdiction of Mandan Police Station. Police identified the two deceased as Sher Ayaz Khan and Adnan, police confirmed. Their bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examinations and legal formalities.

Elsewhere, three people working at basic health units (BHUs) under the Aga Khan NGO were reportedly abducted from Grah Mitho in Tank, according to DPO Tank Abdul Samad. The abductees were identified as Saeed Anwar, Safiullah and Syed Basha.

In South Waziristan's Khasokhel, unidentified individuals targeted the main gate of Prime Minister’s committee member Maulana Misbahullah’s house with explosives at around midnight, damaging the gate. No casualties were reported.

In another incident in Upper Kurram, terrorists fired an RPG-7 round at a house in Dal, within the jurisdiction of Agra Police Station, at around 3:30am. The attack damaged the house’s door, but caused no casualties, DPO Kurram Malik Habib.

Meanwhile, mobile phone services began to be restored in Dera Ismail Khan after three days.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the recent incidents of terrorism in DI Khan and conveyed his condolences over the martyrdom of four Customs officials and one traffic police official. “The recent incidents of terrorism in Dera Ismail Khan are a matter of concern,” he said.

The prime minister expressed deep grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of four Customs officials and one traffic police official in a firing by terrorists. “We stand with the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” he added.

The prime minister said operations by law enforcement agencies against terrorist elements would continue with full force until terrorism was completely eliminated.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a statement, strongly condemned the firing incidents targeting officials in DI Khan and expressed grief over the deaths. He extended his condolences to their families, saying the government stood with them in their hour of grief.

Naqvi said Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was the province worst affected by terrorism and that “such cowardly attacks cannot weaken the nation’s firm resolve to fight terrorism”.
