Israeli attacks on Lebanon 'grave violation' of US-Iran ceasefire, EU,UK,france ,Pakistan & Iran say

The ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran should extend to Lebanon, EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas has said, adding that Hezbollah must disarm, Reuters reports.

“Israeli actions are putting the US-Iran ceasefire under severe strain. The Iran truce should extend to Lebanon,” Kallas said in a post on X.

“Israeli strikes killed hundreds last night, making it hard to argue that such heavy-handed actions fall within self-defence,” she also said.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called Israel's strikes on Lebanon "completely wrong". There has also been reaction from across Europe:

Israel's strikes on Lebanon were "unacceptable", Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot says - while adding Iran must give up the means to obtain nuclear weapons, and its support for proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas

The Israeli strikes were "all the more unacceptable as they undermine the temporary ceasefire reached yesterday between the United States and Iran", he says

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni says: "We have come within a step of the point of no return, but we now face a fragile prospect of peace that must be pursued with determination"

Meanwhile, Spain is reopening its embassy in Tehran, its foreign minister says. Jose Manuel Albares also accused Israel of "flouting the ceasefire" and being "in violation of international law"

After Israeli attacks on Lebanon continued on Wednesday - despite a US-Iran ceasefire - the minister says Iran sent a message to the Oval Office last night, which he sums up as: "You cannot have a cake and eat it at the same time"

He adds: "You cannot ask for a ceasefire and then accept terms and conditions, accept all the areas that a ceasefire is applied to, and name Lebanon, exactly Lebanon in that, and then your ally [Israel] just starts a massacre"

He says the US "must choose" whether it wants war or peace. "They cannot have it both at the same time. They are mutually exclusive, it is quite clear"

When questioned on whether Iran will pull out of negotiations if the Israeli strikes continue, he says: "We are very much focusing on the wellbeing of the whole Middle East"

Nick Robinson asked if Iran will ask its militant proxy, Hezbollah, to stop firing rockets into Israel from Lebanon. Khatibzadeh says the deal includes Lebanon, and Iran and its allies were willing to "accept ceasefire"

The minister says Iran will "provide security for safe passage" through the Strait of Hormuz - but reopening will only happen "after the United States actually withdraw this aggression", seemingly referring to Israel's attacks on Lebanon

Pakistan on Thursday strongly condemned Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon, cautioning that they undermine global efforts for regional peace.

“Pakistan condemns, in the strongest terms, the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and the widespread destruction of infrastructure,” the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement.

It warned, “The Israeli actions undermine international efforts to establish peace and stability in the region and constitute a blatant violation of international law and fundamental humanitarian principles.”

Pakistan called upon the international community to “take urgent steps to end Israeli aggression against Lebanon”.

It reiterated its “unwavering solidarity with the government and people of Lebanon during this difficult time”, adding that it supported Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its peace and stability.

Lebanon declared a national day of mourning on Thursday after Israeli strikes pummelled the country, killing over 200 people and calling into question the Pakistan-brokered ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The Lebanese prime minister’s office said Thursday would be “a national day of mourning for the martyrs and wounded of the Israeli attacks that targeted hundreds of innocent, defenceless civilians”, ordering the closure of public administrations and the lowering of flags.

Hours later, Hezbollah said it had fired rockets towards Israel in response to what it called a violation of the US-Iran truce.

There had been conflicting messages about whether the fighting in Lebanon was included in the truce, with Israel insisting that it was not.

Israel launched its heaviest and most coordinated air assault on Lebanon on Wednesday since the US-Iran war began.

Consecutive explosions rocked Beirut, sending vast plumes of smoke over the capital. The Israeli military claimed it struck more than 100 sites across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon.

Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine said: “The death toll stands at 203 martyrs and more than 1,000 wounded in the aggression against Lebanon on Wednesday.”
