Iran claims downing of 2 US planes; Hormuz ‘deadline’ looms,US rescues airman

Iran claims the downing of two C-130 planes and two Black Hawk helicopters belonging to the US. State television broadcast footage of wreckage, saying it belonged to one of the planes.

This claim comes hours after US President Donald Trump says the American officer who went missing in Iran after the downing of his F-15E fighter jet has been rescued and is “now safe and sound”.

US-Israeli strikes have killed five fighters with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the country’s northwest, state media says, according to AFP.

“Following the brutal attacks of the American-Israeli enemy on the Moghan Plain… five IRGC fighters have attained martyrdom,” said Iran’s official IRNA news agency, citing a statement by the Guards in the northwestern Ardabil province.

Trump also warns that “all hell” will rain down on Iran if it does not reach a peace deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Monday. Tehran rejects what it calls a “helpless and nervous” ultimatum.

An Iranian drone attack has hit a storage tank at Bahrain’s main fuel facility, causing a fire to break out.

Iran says US-Israeli attacks have killed five people and wounded 170 at the Mahshahr Petrochemical Zone and more than 30 universities have been targeted since the beginning of the war.

Iran’s military has said that the US operation to rescue a missing airman from a downed American fighter jet used an abandoned airport in southern Isfahan province, AFP reports.

“The so-called US military rescue operation, planned as a deception and escape mission at an abandoned airport in southern Isfahan under the pretext of recovering the pilot of a downed aircraft, was completely foiled,” said Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesman for the military’s central command, Khatam Al-Anbiya.

He added that “two C-130 military transport planes and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed” during the operation.
