Several people killed in bus crash in Stockholm, police say

Several people were killed and injured when a bus hit a bus stop in central Stockholm on Friday, Swedish police said, adding that they had no information pointing to it being an attack.

There were six casualties in the incident, a spokesperson for Stockholm’s rescue services said, without giving the numbers of those killed or those injured. The spokesperson said there were no passengers on the bus at the time.

“It is being investigated as involuntary manslaughter. The bus driver has been arrested but that is routine in such an incident,” a police spokesperson said, adding they had no information pointing to it being an attack.

Police said they would not comment on the number, gender or ages of those killed or injured.Mathias Häglund, the commanding officer of the rescue service, said only the driver was on board.

Police are treating the crash as "involuntary manslaughter" but are still investigating. It wasn't immediately clear what the cause was.

Swedish news agency TT said police confirmed that the driver had been detained and would be questioned to determine what happened.

The bus involved in the crash was a double-decker belonging to the company Transdev, SVT said.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X he had "received the tragic news that several people have been killed and injured at a bus stop...People who were perhaps on their way home to family, friends, or a quiet evening at home.

He said that "we do not yet know the cause of this, but right now my thoughts are primarily with those who have been affected and their families."
