2 regional jets collide at LaGuardia airport with a wing slamming into a cockpit window

Two Delta Air Lines regional jets collided on the taxiway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport Wednesday night, with the wing of one aircraft slamming into the cockpit windows of the other.

Both aircraft involved in the “low-speed collision” were CRJ-900 regional jets operated by regional carrier Endeavor Air, according to a statement from Delta.

Flight 5047 had just arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina, when the wing of flight 5155, preparing to depart to Roanoke, Virginia, collided with the nose of their aircraft.

NTSB report reveals what was going on inside the San Diego control tower when two planes nearly collided on the runway

“We have two CRJs on (taxiway) M that collided,” the pilot of flight 5047 radioed the ground controller in audio recorded by the website LiveATC.net. “Their right wing clipped our nose and the cockpit wind screens.

The pilot of flight 5155 reported one flight attended injured her knee in the collision, according to the air traffic control audio. One person was taken to the hospital, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which operates the airport. No one else was injured.

“Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience,” the airline said in a statement.

The flight from Charlotte had 57 passengers onboard and the flight to Roanoke had 28 passengers, according to Delta. They were taken to the terminal by bus and were offered hotel room and meals.

The Port Authority says the incident did not impact airport operations.

CNN has reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration for comment on the incident, however it’s not clear if they will immediately respond due to the government shutdown.

An American Airlines pilot taking off at Los Angeles International Airport had to slam on the brakes Sunday after a cargo plane crossed the runway in front of it.

AeroLogic Flight 619, using the callsign German Cargo 619, landed at LAX at 10:33 p.m. from Shanghai, China. AeroLogic is a joint venture between Lufthansa Cargo and DHL.

The Boeing 777 was waiting between two runways to taxi to its parking spot as American Airlines flight 2453 was preparing for takeoff for Boston.

Air traffic control directed the AeroLogic flight to cross runway 25L, but instead the pilots made a right turn, putting them in the path of the jet, according to audio from the website LiveATC.net.

“German Cargo 619, Stop,” the LAX air traffic controller said urgently.

“We are on the runway,” the cargo pilot responded.

“American 2453, cancel takeoff clearance,” the controller said in the LiveATC audio.

“2453 is stopping,” the American Airlines pilot responded.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the AeroLogic flight crossed runway 25R “without authorization.”

The flight “inadvertently crossed a runway… after landing, without the required ATC instruction,” AeroLogic Executive Administrator Wolfgang Sperber said in a statement to CNN. “We are already in contact with the relevant authorities and are investigating the incident.”

The American Flight was going about 167 miles an hour before it slammed on the brakes, about 1.3 miles away from the cargo plane, according to the flight tracking site Flightradar24.

“We thank our crew members for their quick action and our customers for their understanding,” the airline said in a statement.

The American flight returned to the gate and took off for Boston 2.5 hours late.

It’s not clear why the AeroLogic cargo flight made the right turn, however the air traffic controller did, at times, refer to the flight as 419 instead of 619 and urged the pilot to cross the runway “as fast as you can” because of other planes landing.
