All flood relief camps in Multan’s city and Shujabad tehsils have been closed as flood-affected people are now returning to their homes, a statement by Multan district administration spokesperson Waseem Yousuf says. Meanwhile, a survey to calculate losses in areas that have been cleared has begun.
However, it has been decided not to close the relief camps in Saddar tehsil until the return of flood-affected people, the statement adds. Similarly, flood relief camps will not be closed in Jalalpur Pirwala until the situation returns to normal.
“Teams of the urban unit will conduct the survey using latest technology,” it quotes Multan Deputy Commissioner (DC) Waseem Hamid as saying.
It further states that on the directives of Multan DC Hamid, relevant personnel have begun the process of spraying flood-affected houses to kills germs. Similarly, teams from the health department have been tasked with using sprays to kills germs in standing waters.
Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik has visited Jalalpur Pirwala and inspected the gas pipeline affected in the flood-hit area.
Gas supply to the area has been ensured through an alternate pipeline, the minister said, according to Radio Pakistan.
Multan Commissioner Amir Karim briefed the minister on the relief and rescue operation, according to a statement from his office. He further said that work on the damaged part of the M-5 motorway has been initiated using heavy machinery.
The commissioner also visited the affected part of the motorway to assess the restoration work. According to him, a damage assessment will be carried out once the floodwaters have receded. Deputy Commissioner Wasim Hamid Sindhu also accompanied the commissioner.
Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has attended an event in Multan where relief packages were provided to 350 flood-affected families.
The packages, in collaboration with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund and the Farmers Development Organisation, will be distributed to 2,500 flood-hit families, according to a post by PPP on X.
“We share the grief of the flood victims equally,” Gilani was quoted as saying.
“The government is taking comprehensive measures for the rehabilitation of flood victims,” he assured the flood victims, adding that he was fully aware of their suffering.
“The federal government, in collaboration with the provinces, is taking every possible step.”
The Multan deputy commissioner’s office has said that rehabilitation work is continuing in the Jalalpur Pirwala area after intense flooding.
“Steps are being taken to protect the motorway from further flood damage and heavy machinery has been deployed at the site,” a statement read.
“Work is underway to repair a gas pipeline along the damaged section of the motorway,” it added, quoting Multan DC Waseem Hamid Sindu. “The restoration of the damaged sections will start once floodwater recedes.”
