Ahsan Bhoon beats Latif Khosa with big margin


Asma Jahangir Group’s Bhoon bags 1,548 votes including 735 from Lahore Registry

Lahore/Islamabad, Multan 95, Peshawar 90 Hyderabad 28, Sukkur 26 Bahawalpur 55, Dera Ismail Khan 9 (Latif Khosa(19)  -  Ahsan Bhoon of the Asma Jahangir Group was elected as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday.

An official announcement will be made in this regard on November 3.

He bagged 1,548 votes, while his rival candidate Sardar Latif Khan Khosa of the Hamid Khan Group got 920 votes. Bhoon defeated Khosa with a big margin of 628 votes. The victorious group celebrated the victory of their candidate in several cities. Supporters danced on the beat of drum. Rose petals were showered on Ahsan Bhoon and lawyers celebrated his victory till late at night. Talking to media, the SCBA’s newly-elected President Ahsan Bhoon said that he will end division in the judiciary. “I will work for supremacy of the constitution and strengthen the democratic institutions,” he maintained. Ahsan reiterated the resolve to continue with helping justice seekers.


Bhoon said that the bar and bench will have to go along with each other. “The Parliament has weakened. The elected representatives should not fill up their kitty. They should work for the people and betterment of the institution,” he added. SCBA’s secretary slot was also won by Asma Jahangir Group’s candidate Waseem Mumtaz Malik. As per detail, Ahsan Bhoon won with a big margin from Lahore Registry securing 735 votes whereas Latif Khosa bagged only 277 votes. Nineteen votes were rejected in Lahore. Bhoon took 90votes from Peshawar while his rival candidate of Hamid Khan Group could bag only 61 votes. Similarly, from Islamabad Bhoon got 158 votes and Khosa took 107, from Multan Bhoon got 95 votes and Khosa secured 71, from Hyderabad Bhoon grabbed 28 and Khosa got 21, from Abbotabad he got 28 and Khosa bagged 11, from Dera Ismail Khan Bhoon got 9, Khosa bagged 19. In Sukkur Bhoon succeeded in claiming 26 votes and Khosa lagged behind with only 6 votes. Bhoon managed victory almost from all cities except DI Khan where Khosa bagged more votes than Bhoon.

On other seats of the SCBA, for Vice President Balochistan Muhammad Qasim Khan and Omer Farooq, Vice President KP M Ajmal Khan and Saleemullah Khan, Vice President Punjab Imtiaz Ahmad Kamboh, Muhammad Ibrahim, Khawar Ikram and Syed Sibtain Haider, Vice President Sindh Javed Ahmad and Aziz Khan, for Secretary SCBA Hammad Akbar, Maqtadar Akhtar and Waseem Mumtaz, for Additional Secretary Riasat Ali and Malik Shakeel, for Finance Secretary Ali Ahmad Khan, Riaz Hussain and Shehnaz Akhtar had a tough contest among them.

For Member Executive Balochistan Adbul Maalik Baloch, Dr Muhammad Nasir, Muhammad Usman and Syed Muhammad Tahir, for Member Executive KP Abid Ali, Fida Bahadur and Hayatullah Khan, for Member Executive Punjab Muhammad Akbar, Muhammad Syem, Ruqayya Sami, Syed Muhammad Saqlain and Tariq Javed and for Member Executive Sindh Abdul Khurshid Khan, Jan Ali Junejo, Parveen Chachar and Syed Zulfiqar Shah had neck-on-neck contest.

Poling continued from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Meanwhile, a break was given for an hour from 1:00 to 2:00 pm for Zohr Prayer and lunch. There were 3121 registered eligible voters across the country for the SCBA elections. Afrasiyab Khan acted as Chairman Election Board for SCBA elections. Majority of SCBA voters (1267) belong to Lahore who exercised their right to vote at Lahore Registry.
