US has an important and vital relationship with Pakistan as both the countries have shared threats, concerns and interests in the region, said State Department Spokesman John Kirby, a day after Pakistan Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz said relations between Washington and Islamabad are under stress.
Kirby said ties between the two countries are complicated at times but it is an important relationship that “we continue to work at very, very seriously, and we are going to remain committed to”.
When asked to comment on closure of Torkham border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said US wants to see the crossing stay open.
The major border crossing between the two countries was closed after Afghanistan objected to fencing of the border that Pakistan intends to carry out in order to stop infiltration of militants.
Responding to a question about US stance regarding India’s membership of Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG), the spokesman said President Obama reaffirmed US views on the issue during his last year visit to India that New Delhi meets missile technology control regime requirements and is ready for NSG membership.
