Air force plane crashes in France, one person dead, ministry says

One person was killed, and one other was missing after a military plane crashed in the northeast of France on Tuesday evening, France's armed forces ministry said on Wednesday.

The French air force Mirage 2000D came down in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region with two people on board, the ministry said.

A fighter pilot and a weapons systems navigator were on the plane, Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Air Base 133 in Nancy-Ochey, said.

"They were on a training mission involving a night flight, which ultimately led to this situation and this accident," Humbert added.

French military personnel take part in a rescue operation to search for a Mirage 2000D fighter jet that crashed during a training flight, in Tremblecourt, north-eastern France on October 21, 2026.Cause of crash unknown, search for missing individual ongoing

According to France’s Le Monde, authorities have not yet commented on the potential cause of the crash, but an investigation into the incident has been opened.

French National Gendarmerie helicopters were reportedly spotted flying over the scene Wednesday morning, and searches for the missing individual were initially postponed because of poor weather.
