One person died after a boat with around 270 people on board capsized off North Cyprus on Sunday, Turkish Cypriot media reported.
TRNC Prime Minister Unal Ustel said the vessel had been carrying a total of 267 people when it rolled over shortly after leaving port, according to Turkish state news agency Anadolu.
Ustel added that 172 people had so far been rescued and that operations were continuing to evacuate the remaining passengers and crew, Anadolu said.
Turkiye’s ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Basceri, confirmed there were deaths, without giving a number. He told Turkish state television network TRT that “the large majority of the 259 passengers have been rescued”.The cause of the capsize was not immediately known.
It occurred shortly after the ferry departed from the Northern Cyprus port of Kyrenia headed for the Turkish port of Tasucu.
Images broadcast by Turkish television showed the upside-down ferry in the water, with people wearing life vests atop its orange hull. The weather was sunny, and several boats were seen in the area to lend assistance.
The TRNC, which is recognised only by Turkiye, controls the northern third of the island of Cyprus, which has been divided since 1974. The TRNC today is served with regular air and sea links to Turkiye.
“All necessary preparations are being made for a swift response from rescue and health services,” the TRNC’s health ministry said in a statement.
It added that hospitals in the territory had been alerted so they could provide any medical attention that might be needed. The TRNC is dependent on Turkiye, and Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said on X that “we are providing all necessary assistance to the search and rescue operations”.
Turkish Cypriot Transport Minister Erhan Arikli told Anadolu that one passenger had died when the ferry capsized. He said there were 267 people on board, 259 of whom were passengers and eight of whom were crew.
The privately owned ferry left the North Cyprus port of Kyrenia at 12:30 p.m. (0930 GMT) and immediately started taking on water for an unknown reason, Turkiye’s state-run news agency Anadolu reported.
It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province in the eastern Mediterranean.
Those rescued from the vessel were taken to Kyrenia port to be transferred to hospitals, he added.
Murat Senkul, the mayor of Kyrenia, told broadcaster CNN Turk that 159 passengers on board the vessel had been reached.
Video footage showed people in red life jackets sitting or standing on top of the overturned vessel as authorities scrambled coast guard and private vessels for assistance to bring them to shore.
The Kibris newspaper reported that the vessel, which some reports said was a catamaran, began taking in water about four miles off the shore.
