Heavy rain, floods kill 22 people in Afghanistan,17 killed as heavy rains trigger roof collapses in K-P

Heavy rain that triggered severe flooding and caused buildings to collapse has killed 22 people and injured 32 in Afghanistan, while 17 in Pakistan's KPK over the last two days, the country's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Monday, as it warned of continued risk due to bad weather.

Most of the deaths were reported from the central and eastern provinces of the war-shattered South Asian nation, including Parwan, Maidan Wardak, Daykundi and Logar, where torrential rain triggered flash floods and caused houses to collapse in rural and mountainous regions, the authority said.

Conditions remained "unstable" in parts of the country on Monday, with continued risk of further rain and flooding in some areas, it said.

"Twenty-two people were killed, 32 injured and 241 houses damaged in flooding and other weather-related incidents across 13 provinces over the past two days," an NDMA official, who did not want to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, told Reuters.

Afghanistan is prone to natural disasters, and the United Nations lists it among the countries most vulnerable to climate change.

With international aid, which formed the backbone of the government's finances, slashed since the Taliban seized power in 2021, the country has been struggling to cope.

A United Nations Development Programme report in November said earthquakes, floods, and drought had destroyed 8,000 homes in Afghanistan in 2025 and strained public services "beyond their limits".

At least 17 people, including 14 children, have been killed and 56 others injured after heavy rains triggered roof and wall collapses in parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa since March 25, according to a report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday.

Bannu recorded the highest casualties, with eight deaths, including seven children and one woman, and 42 injured. Abbottabad reported five deaths, including four children. Kohat saw two fatalities, North Waziristan one, and in Battagram one woman was killed.

The report also noted that 11 houses were damaged in the rains, five of which were in Bannu.

Several incidents of roofs collapsing were recorded in Bannu. In the village of Dad Kachlot, a roof collapsed in the house of Sher Muhammad Khan, killing three children: nine-year-old Asif, six-year-old Umrah, and three-year-old Javeria. At Kotka Ghulam Qadir, the roof of a veranda at a community centre collapsed, killing two people and injuring 39.

In Mama Kheil, a house wall collapsed, killing two children, 11-year-old Abu Sufyan and eight-year-old Wajahatullah. In Shamdi Khel, Miryan Road, the roof of a room in the house of Iqbal collapsed, killing Iqbal’s mother.

In Kohat, a room’s roof in Gumbat collapsed during heavy rain, killing two children, 10-year-old Laiba and 12-year-old Abdul Karim.

Abbottabad also witnessed a deadly incident in Khaitar Hajiya Gali, Tehsil Havelian, where the roof of a room in Muhammad Ashraf’s house collapsed, killing five people: 26-year-old Muhammad Sohail, 10-year-old Asma, seven-year-old Anzish, nine-year-old Musfara, and seven-year-old Anaya.

PDMA officials continue to monitor the situation as rescue and relief operations are underway across the affected districts. Officials have directed local administrations in the affected districts to ensure the prompt provision of relief goods.

In Lakki Marwat, a roof collapsed in the Serai Noorung area late at night, injuring two children aged eight and three. Rescue teams retrieved them from the rubble and shifted them to a hospital.

In Nowshera, a house roof collapsed in the Bara Banda area, injuring two men and two women. Rescue 1122 teams evacuated all the injured and transported them to a hospital.

Intermittent rainfall continues across the province, affecting Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank, North Waziristan, Kohat, Bajaur, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Battagram, Shangla, and Khyber.

Light snowfall has been reported in the higher mountainous regions, while lower hill areas are experiencing a sharp drop in temperature.
