5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes Khuzdar

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck 86 kilometres northeast of Khuzdar in Balochistan on Friday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported. Several districts in Sindh and Balochistan experienced earthquake tremors, according to the Seismic Monitoring Centre of the PMD.

Initial tremors were recorded at a magnitude of 3.8, followed by a second quake measuring 5.8. The tremors were felt in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Dadu, Naseerabad, and surrounding areas.

In Khuzdar, the first tremor occurred at 10.52am, registering 3.8 on the Richter scale, and was followed by a second tremor at 11.30am, which measured 5.6.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located 86 kilometres northeast of Khuzdar, while the PMD also reported that the earthquake had a depth of 33 kilometres, with the epicentre 75 kilometres southeast of Khuzdar.

Reuters also reported that an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck Balochistan, attributing the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which struck 79 km (49.09 miles) away from Khuzdar, was at a depth of 10 km, USGS said.

Last month, an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 jolted Gilgit, Hunza and Ghizer areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

Another earthquake earlier in January measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale was felt across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Swat, Malakand, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, Skardu, Abbottabad, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, causing panic among residents.
