Fire destroys over 70 temporary shops near Lighthouse

A major fire on Thursday destroyed more than 70 temporary shops and stalls near the drain close to Lighthouse Lady Dufferin Hospital. No casualties were reported.

The blaze erupted suddenly in the area, quickly spreading to dozens of shops and stalls containing winter clothing, including sweaters, jackets, mufflers, blankets, socks, shoes, and sandals.

Many shopkeepers had brought the stock on credit from Shershah and planned to repay it after sales. The fire reduced the merchandise to ashes.

Police, fire brigade, and rescue teams, including 1122 and KMC fire brigade, rushed to the site. Due to the intensity of the fire and the narrow lanes in the area, multiple fire tenders were requested. After around 45 minutes of firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control.

Fire Officer Zafar Khan said the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, although the exact cause is yet to be confirmed. Shopkeepers have urged the Sindh government to compensate them for their losses.
