UK, UN to co-host Afghan fundraising summit next month

Britain said on Tuesday it would co-host a virtual UN summit aimed at raising billions to avert a “devastating” humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power.

With the fundamentalist regime now denied access to Western funds, the United Nations says more than 24 million Afghans need urgent help to survive, and half the population is facing acute hunger.

The UN said last month that $4.4 billion was needed, as it launched its largest appeal yet for a single country.

Donor countries, UN agencies and Afghan civil society organisations are set to take part in the online event next month, the UK government and UN said in a joint statement, without giving a date.

The British government announced that they will co-host a virtual United Nations summit that is aimed at raising $4.4 billion to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

A joint statement released by the UK government and UN reads that Donor countries, UN agencies, and Afghan civil society to attend the online meeting but the exact date.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss the summit would focus on delivering shelter, food, and health services, in particular for women and girls who have been sidelined since the Taliban takeover. The summit comes as international organizations have been urging donor countries to scale up aid to the vulnerable people of Afghanistan as they are going through the worst humanitarian situation in the world.

On Tuesday, IRC called on the US and Europe to reset their policies towards Afghanistan lest the humanitarian situation kills more Afghans.
