Justice Bandial made CJP


President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday appointed Justice Umar Atta Bandial as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The appointment was made by the President under Article 175 of the Constitution. The appointment of Justice Umar Atta Bandial will be effective from February 2, 2022.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed will retire on February 1, 2022. Justice Bandial is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court.

Umar Ata Bandial (born 17 September 1958) is a Pakistani jurist who has been a Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan since 17 June 2014.

Justice Bandial will become chief justice for one year, six months and 25 days on 2 February 2022 until 16 September 2023.

Bandial received his bachelor's degree in economics from Columbia University in 1979 and received his law degree from the University of Cambridge in 1981
