At least 10 people died when a boat capsized in Keenjhar Lake in Sindh's Thatta district on Monday.
The boat was carrying 13 picnickers out of which three have been rescued, the deputy commissioner of the district said. The boat owner also managed to survive, but is on the run, Thatta DC Usman Tanveer told reporters.
The deceased included nine women, and a minor girl. All the visitors were from the same family, residents of Mehmoodabad, an area of Karachi.
Overloading and bad weather are likely to be the causes of the accident, the official added.
The lake is popular with residents who travel for day-long tours. Life jackets are generally not provided, and the boats are poorly maintained.
Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed Thatta DC to submit a detailed report.
"How did the incident occur?" the CM enquired. "Where were the rescue boats and teams?"
He added that loss of life was a matter of great distress. Expressing deep regret, the chief minister directed authorities concerned to extend all possible assistance to the victims.
