At least 10 people were killed and 17 others injured in an armed clash among the members of a family over a land dispute in Jalalpur Peerwala, Multan on Wednesday – the first day of Eidul Fitr.
Taking notice of the incident, Punjab Inspector General of Police Captain (retd) Arif Nawaz on Thursday suspended the relevant senior superintendent of police and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the CPO and RPO for the arrest of the culprits.
According to Jalalpur Peerwala police, around 20 people from the Kala Jafar Group were coming back from a mosque after offering Eid prayers when members of the Ghulam Nazuk Group opened indiscriminate firing. As a result, a gun battle ensued in which seven people from the Kala Jafar Group, while three from the rival group were killed.
Police said initial investigation revealed that the clash took place over a land dispute while further investigation is still under way. “Wanted robbers, Kala Jaffar and his son, are among those who were killed,” police said.
Police said a case had been registered against 23 people, including 18 nominated and five unidentified, at the Saddar police station, adding that six accused were arrested while police teams were searching for the remaining ones.
According to the police, Akhtar Abbas, son of Muhammad Yar, filed an application with the Saddar police station, complaining that he, Mumtaz alias Kala, Aqib Javed, Saleem Akhtar and others, were returning after offering Eid prayer when 18 armed accused, including Khurrum, Azhar, Jawad and others, along with five unidentified accomplices, fired and killed Kala, Javed, Akhtar and others over an old enmity. Police registered a case No 382/19 US 302, 324,149,148,109 and 7 ATA.
The funeral prayers of the deceased were offered on Thursday amid tight security. A large number of residents of the area attended the funeral prayers.
The deceased and the injured were initially shifted to the tehsil headquarter hospital from where nine of the wounded were later moved to Nishtar Hospital, Multan.
Six months ago, five people were injured as a result of an exchange of fire between the said groups. Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar sought a detailed report from the RPO, Multan over the incident.
