Foreign Object Debris (FOD) causing a financial loss of $ one billion across the world besides putting the lives of passengers in danger,said Syed Mubarak Shah Airport Manager while briefing the participants of Awareness walk on Wednesday at Multan International Airport.Dubbed the FOD walk, it aims to raise awareness in keeping the entire aircraft movement areas free of FODs. FOD stands for foreign object debris, which, in aviation, is any substance or material, alien to an aircraft, which could potentially cause damage.

The session was attended by officials of CAA, Airports Security Force (ASF), Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and other international and local airlines followed by FOD Walk. The walk was led by Airport Manager (APM), Mubarak Shah along with Deputy Manager Safety & Quality Management System, Chief Security Officer ASF , Station Managers of PIA and other airlines and General Sales Agents. Large number of operational personnel participated in the event and pledged to play their vital role in maintaining safe environment for aircraft operations at MIAP, Multan
At the end of event, the participants were sensitized by APM regarding the importance of safety culture in aviation.FODs, if ingested by a jet engine, can cause damage to its components and could endanger the lives of people on or around the aircraft.
It could be aircraft parts, birds, broken pavement, rocks, tools and even trash, that are mistakenly or purposely left on the ramp, tarmac, or runway surfaces.
By inviting airline and ground-handling employees to join the walk, the MIAP aims to impress on them the serious danger that FODs may bring to flight, passengers and even to their own lives as airport workers.The Walk was also joined by M.Qayyum Khalid spokesperson of CAA.
