Jail authorities 'unilaterally cancel' meeting between Sharif, legal counsel

The authorities in Central Jail Rawalpindi on Wednesday ‘unilaterally cancelled’ a meeting between members of the Sharif family and their legal counsel on Thursday.
The legal team, which includes Khwaja Harris, Saad Hashmi, Zafir Khan and Amjad Pervaiz were reportedly conferring with jail authorities for the past two days after permission was denied on July 18.
Deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s legal team was informed that they would be able to meet their clients at 11am today, but received a call from the jail superintendent while they were on the way to Adiala prison informing them of cancellation, a member of the legal team told South Punjab News.
“While we were on our way and had almost reached Adyala Jail today, we received a call from an assistant at the Superintendent Adyala Jail’s office and were asked not to come today as our meeting had been unilaterally cancelled,” said a member of the legal team.
“It needs to be highlighted that Mian sahib, Maryam Safdar and Capt. (retd) Mohammad Safdar are not even being permitted to meet their legal counsel,” he added.
An approved list of visitors for Nawaz at Adiala jail for July 19 included Ayaz Sadiq, Senator Asif Kirmani, Javed Hashmi, Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Ex-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, 23 Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) members and 11 family members.
The federal cabinet on Wednesday retracted an earlier decision to hold the ousted premier’s trial inside the jail, allowing him to have an “open trial” in the two corruption references pending with an accountability court.
Maryam Nawaz is set to be shifted to the Sihala Rest House from Adiala Jail, South Punjab News. reported on Wednesday.
