Anti-dumping case: Industrialists call for appointing appellate tribunal chief

The Organisation for Advancement and Safeguard of Industrial Sector – a representative body of industries – has asked the federal government to immediately appoint a permanent chairman and members of the anti-dumping appellate tribunal which will ensure speedy disposal of cases and effective functioning of the tribunal.

In this connection, representatives of domestic industries held a meeting to discuss the challenges encountered by them. Corporate members of the industrial organisation talked about the situation arising in the wake of increasing number of cases at the anti-dumping appellate tribunal.
At present, two members are working in the tribunal on additional charge. One of them is working as chairman.
According to the organisation, the industry is extremely worried about the fate of its tariff protection petitions due to technical and legal issues. It pointed out that all cases of domestic industries had been decided on technical grounds having serious implications for them.
It was decided that the industries would jointly raise voice in order to ensure that members and chairman of the appellate tribunal were appointed without further delay.
The industry representatives decided to push government institutions to realise their responsibility and take immediate steps for the survival of domestic businesses.
Turning their focus to the overall national economy, the industrialists voiced concern over the current situation of foreign currency reserves and reaffirmed their resolve to bring trade surplus by resorting to import substitution and boosting exports from Pakistan.
Had the previous governments taken timely steps to protect the domestic industry and build its capacity enough to cater to the local demand, the situation could have been entirely different, they remarked. They also lashed out at the short-term approach and policies of the government without considering the long-term impact. They decided to form a sector-wise alliance to highlight the problems and get them resolved on an immediate basis.
