A member of the Pakistan’s diplomatic staff in Jalalabad has been shot dead outside his residence, a spokesman for the Foreign Office said here on Monday.
Rana Nayyar, who worked as an assistant with the diplomatic mission, was gunned down by unknown attackers riding on motorbike outside his house in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. he added.
Strongly condemning the murder, the spokesman demanded of the Afghan government to enhance security of Pakistan’s diplomatic staff.
A senior Afghan official had been summoned to the Foreign Office to receive protest over the murder of Pakistani diplomatic official in Jalalabad.
Meanwhile, Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari strongly condemned the killing of a Pakistani diplomat in the Afghan city of Jalalabad.
In a statement, the PPP chairman said that providing protection to foreign diplomats and their families was the primary responsibility of the Afghan government.
He said that the murder of a Pakistani diplomat, Nayyar, is a matter of serious public concern, with implications for bilateral ties between the two countries.
He urged the Afghan authorities to conduct an investigation into the murder and strengthen security protocols for Pakistani diplomats in their country.
A member of Pakistan's diplomat corps serving at the consulate in Afghanistan's Jalalabadcitywas shot dead on Monday evening, SouthPunjabNews.com reported.
Attaullah Khogyani, the spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar, confirmed his murder.“Police have launched an investigation into the incident. No arrests have been made so far,” Khogyani said.Iqbal was an assistant to the consul general in Jalalabad, the capital of the restive Nangarhar province, which borders Pakistan.
Khan said he had “absolutely no idea” why Iqbal, a father of five, was targeted.
The staffer's body has been shifted to a hospital in Jalalabad for a postmortem examination.
Islamabad condemned the incident and demanded increased security for consular staff and employees working in Afghanistan, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Faisal said.
The Foreign Office also summoned the Afghan chargé d'affaires to register an official protest.
The incident comes a few months after two Pakistani diplomats working at the same consulate in Jalalabad were kidnapped and later freed.
