At least eight miners were killed and many others were trapped when a coalmine collapsed in northwest Pakistan on Saturday. According to Geo News, the coalmine caved in due to heavy rain in Lower Orakzai Agency in country’s tribal belt.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), media wing of the Pakistan army, said in a statement that 27 people have been recovered alive. The ISPR said 100 personnel of the army and the Frontier Corps were engaged in the rescue operation.
The statement said five to six more people are believed trapped inside the debris. It said the rescue operation was being carried out with the help of heavy machinery .
Those retrieved by rescue officials are said to have sustained minor injuries. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other departments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province are also involved in rescue work besides the Pakistan Army and paramilitary troops.
