Israel began “tactical pauses” in fighting for “humanitarian purposes” from 10am to 8pm (07:00-17:00 GMT) in al-Mawasi, Deir el-Balah and Gaza City, starting on Sunday.
Despite the pauses, Israeli forces have killed at least 53 Palestinians in attacks on Gaza since the early hours of Sunday, as six more Palestinians starve to death.
Independent sources said ,"At least 62 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza despite a “tactical pause” in fighting to allow aid into the enclave, medical sources told Among the dead, 34 were aid seekers.
They have seized the Freedom Flotilla’s Handala ship, detaining its 21 crew members, as they attempted to break the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 59,733 people and wounded 144,477. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that malnutrition in Gaza is on a “dangerous trajectory” as deaths due to the food crisis increase.
“The crisis remains entirely preventable. Deliberate blocking and delay of large-scale food, health, and humanitarian aid has cost many lives. Nearly one in five children under five in Gaza City is now acutely malnourished, as reported by Nutrition Cluster partners,” the WHO wrote on X.
According to Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) indicators, the percentage of children aged 6–59 months suffering from acute malnutrition “tripled” since June in Gaza City, making it the “worst-hit” area in the enclave.
“WHO calls for urgent, sustained efforts to flood the Gaza Strip with diverse, nutritious food and to expedite the delivery of therapeutic supplies for children and vulnerable groups, as well as essential medicines and supplies,” the organisation said.
“This flow must remain consistent and unhindered to support recovery and prevent further deterioration,” it added.
Israeli energy minister says army operating under ‘international law’
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen says that while Hamas wants to reach a point where international pressure stops the war, “we must think with reason, not emotion.”
In an interview with the public broadcaster Kan, Cohen claimed Israel was operating “in accordance with international law”.
Cohen said that through consultations between the Foreign Ministry and European governments, Israel ensured that sanctions were not placed on it despite efforts to push for the measures due to the army’s conduct in Gaza and the lack of aid allowed into the enclave.
“Although adhering to it [international law] may sometimes be emotionally challenging, it helps us continue fighting to achieve our objectives,” Cohen said.
According to the Politico news website on Friday, the EU is currently assessing responses after finding Israel in breach of human rights obligations under an associated agreement. EU ministers are expected to discuss the measures during a meeting next month, according to two unnamed officials quoted by Politico.
At central Gaza’s al-Awda Hospital, staff are struggling to keep malnourished children alive because of a lack of medical supplies and supplements.
Majeda Wahdan, a mother who brought her child to the facility, explained that there was no food available to her family as the hunger crisis worsens in the enclave.
“I brought my son here after he developed medical complications. The doctors told me he’s suffering from acute malnutrition. I used to breastfeed him, but it wasn’t enough. I was receiving milk from UNRWA. Now that supply has run out,” Wahdan told Al Jazeera.
At least four people were killed and others injured after Israeli forces targeted civilians in Gaza City and Khan Younis, Wafa reported, citing medical sources.
According to a source at al-Ahli Hospital, a woman was killed in an Israeli air strike near Salah al-Din Mosque in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City.
Moreover, a source at the Nasser Medical Complex said one person was killed after an air strike northwest of Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
