Lapu-Lapu festival- Eleven people dead after car drives into street festival in Vancouver, police say

At least eleven people were killed when a man drove into a crowd at a Filipino heritage festival in the Canadian city of Vancouver, and an unknown number were injured, police said Sunday.

The vehicle entered the street at 8:14 pm on Saturday and struck people attending the Lapu Lapu Day festival, the Vancouver Police Department said in a social media post.

Several other people were injured but the exact number of casualties was not immediately available.

The driver is in custody, Vancouver Police add - they will provide another update at midnight local time (08:00 BST)

The Filipino community's Lapu Lapu Day festival was under way when the incident took place shortly after 20:00 local time (04:00 BST)

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he's "devastated" to learn about the deadly incident - as do the leaders of the Conservative Party and the NDP

Fatalities have been confirmed after a car plowed into a crowd at a street festival celebrating Filipino heritage in Vancouver on Saturday night, according to officials in the Canadian city.

“A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival,” the Vancouver Police Department wrote in a statement on X.The driver of the vehicle is in custody, according to police.

Prime Minister Mark Carney mourned the dead and wounded, calling the ramming “horrific” in a statement on X.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you,” he wrote

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event,” Ken Sim wrote on X.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”Sim said he would provide more information on the incident.
