Palestinians call for end to Israel’s Gaza onslaught as renewed offensive displaces 142,000

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoon and Jabalia to demand an end to Israel’s attacks and blockade on Gaza, Al Jazeera reports .The protest took place on Tuesday, according to the Wafa news agency.

They held up placards that said, “We refuse to die”, “The blood of our children is not cheap” and “Stop the war”, Wafa reported.

It quoted one protester as saying, “Enough displacement. We want to live! The siege is severe. There’s no food, no security, no water, not even money. Enough of this situation. We want to live with dignity.

In Beit Lahiya, some shouted “Hamas out” and “Hamas terrorists”, it said.  Majdi, a protester who did not wish to give his full name, told the agency that the “people are tired”.

“If Hamas leaving power in Gaza is the solution, why doesn’t Hamas give up power to protect the people?” he asked

Nine first responders have been missing for a fourth consecutive day after they failed to return from a rescue mission in southern Gaza’s Rafah city, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said on X.

The PRCS staff headed for the al-Hashaashin neighbourhood of Rafah on Sunday after reports of casualties. The organisation said they were “besieged” by Israeli forces and that Israeli authorities refused to cooperate with efforts to reach them through international organisations.

Israeli forces carry out mass interrogations, arrest seven people near Ramallah, Bethlehem

Israeli forces have carried out mass interrogations that have taken place in the village of al-Mughayyir, near Ramallah, and several refugee camps near Bethlehem, according to the Wafa news agency.  In al-Mughayyir, Israeli forces temporarily detained and interrogated 30 young men while raiding the homes of two former prisoners and arresting them, according to Wafa.

In Bethlehem municipality’s Beit Jibrin camp, Israeli forces rounded up 20 more Palestinians for hours-long field interrogations while arresting two people, said Wafa. They also arrested three people in the Aida refugee camp, the report added.

The UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA said at least eight aid workers have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed its onslaught last week, Al Jazeera reports.

They include staff members of UNOPS, the UNRWA and MSF.

The killings bring the total death toll among aid workers to 399, including 289 UN staff members, 34 of the Palestine Red Crescent Society and 10 of MSF.Israel’s renewed offensive on Gaza displaces 142,000 Palestinians

The UN’s humanitarian agency (OCHA) says more than 142,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced since Israel resumed its war on Gaza on March 18, Al Jazeera reports.

“Fleeing with only a few personal belongings, many people are now staying on the streets, in desperate need for food, drinking water, and shelter essentials,” the agency said.

The displacement is being driven mainly by Israel’s displacement orders and its destruction of homes and public infrastructure, OCHA said. Since Israel resumed the onslaught, its military has issued six notices, placing about 15 per cent of the Gaza Strip under evacuation.

The agency said about 250,000 people were in the areas slated for evacuation in Rafah, Khan Younis and north Gaza, including more than 50,000 people at 240 sites for internally displaced people.

Doctors Without Borders, known by its French acronym MSF, says the remaining water system in Gaza will completely collapse if fuel supplies run out, all but cutting off people’s access to clean water in the Strip, Al Jazeera reports.

The statement came as Israel’s punishing blockade entered its 25th day.

The aid group said the lack of access to safe water is already having dire consequences for people’s health.

In al-Mawasi and Khan Younis healthcare centres, the three most common conditions treated by MSF, jaundice, diarrhoea and scabies, are directly caused by inadequate provision of safe water, it said.

“The sheer number of children with skin conditions is a direct result of Gaza’s destruction and blockade,” said Chiara Lodi, MSF medical team coordinator in Gaza. “In addition to treating adults and children who have severe war injuries, our staff are treating an increasing number of children with entirely preventable skin diseases like scabies, which is not only uncomfortable, but in severe cases, sees them scratch their skin until it bleeds which can lead to infection.”

“This is a result of children being unable to bathe, spreading scabies and other infections, leaving lasting scars,” she added.

Hadja Lahbib, the European commissioner for equality, says she is concerned by alarming reports of yet more Israeli attacks on health workers, ambulances and hospitals in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports.

“These acts undermine the essential and heroic efforts of aid workers striving to save lives in the midst of hostilities. Humanitarian aid efforts must continue to help people in desperate need. International Humanitarian Law must be respected by all,” she said in a statement.

Al Jazeera noted that Lahbib’s comments came after Israeli forces bombed Gaza’s Nasser Hospital on Monday, killing at least two people, and the Palestine Red Crescent Society said nine of its staff were missing for a third consecutive day after deploying for a rescue mission in Rafah.

Hundreds of Palestinians shouted anti-Hamas slogans at a protest in northern Gaza, calling for an end to the conflict with Israel, AFP quotes witnesses as saying.

The mostly male demonstrators chanted “Hamas out” and “Hamas terrorists” in Beit Lahia, where the crowd had gathered a week after the Israeli army resumed its intense bombing of Gaza following nearly two months of a truce.

On the social media network Telegram, at least one appeal to protest had circulated yesterday. “I don’t know who organised the protest,” said Mohammed, a demonstrator who declined to give his last name for fear of reprisals.

“I took part to send a message on behalf of the people: Enough with the war,” he said, adding that he had seen “members of the Hamas security forces in civilian clothing breaking up the protest”.

Majdi, another protester who did not wish to give his full name, said the “people are tired”. “If Hamas leaving power in Gaza is the solution, why doesn’t Hamas give up power to protect the people?” he asked.

Israel regularly calls for Gazans to mobilise against the movement that has been in power in the territory since 2007. Levels of discontent towards Hamas in Gaza are difficult to gauge.

Israeli police has released Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, after detaining him a day earlier for “hurling rocks” following what activists described as an attack by settlers in the occupied West Bank, AFP reports.

Basel Adra, who worked with Ballal on the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land”, posted a photo of Ballal on X after his release with blood stains on his shirt.
