Germany: Explosion reported at Continental building

An explosion tore through the Continental automotive and tyre plant in Hanover, Germany, on Wednesday morning, prompting a mass casualty response.

The blast blew out windows and scattered glass across Philipsbornstrasse, with the building’s façade also suffering visible damage. Early reports suggest that a boiler on the fifth floor detonated, leaving at least two people injured. Another five individuals are currently undergoing medical checks, according to fire brigade spokesperson Charlotte Kubel. Despite the severity of the explosion, there are no signs of fire, and emergency crews are using drones and turntable ladders to inspect the upper levels of the plant.

Fearing further casualties, emergency services swiftly declared a major operation, sealing off the area while they carried out a thorough investigation. Witnesses described a loud bang followed by a powerful pressure wave. The lack of smoke indicates the explosion didn’t ignite any flames, but crews remain on high alert. In addition to searching for victims, firefighters are working to assess any structural damage that could pose further risk to those inside.

An inquiry into the explosion’s origin is underway, but officials have yet to confirm the precise cause. While there is no immediate sign of foul play, Germany has recently been on edge following several attacks on civilians. Authorities stress that there is no indication this incident is linked to criminal activity. As the investigation progresses, updates will be provided by local officials, and residents are advised to stay informed through official channels.
