Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto on Sunday said the ministry had received a complaint by the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia, which alleged at least 44 cases of illegal surcharges at the airport, CNA reported.
Agus said the officials involved had been temporarily dismissed, presenting an opportunity for reforms.
The Chinese Embassy late last month sent a complaint to Indonesian authorities, saying several Chinese citizens had been extorted by immigration officials at the Soekarno-Hatta airport, being forced to pay before being allowed entry.
At least 44 extortion cases happened between February 2024 and January 2025, the complaint said. A total of Rp32.75 million ($2,000), taken from 60 Chinese visitors, have been recovered afterwards, the Jakarta Globe reported.
The embassy has proposed the installation of signs in Chinese, Indonesian and English at checkpoints to warn about extortion.
