United Kingdom is the third largest global trading partner of Pakistan and is keen to double its bilateral trade up to £ 7 billion with Pakistan in a few years to achieve mutual prosperity for both countries.British investors and traders must focus on South Punjab to bring an economic revolution in this area to bring it at par with other developed areas of Pakistan. This was statewd by Khawaja Jalal uddin Roomi former President of Multan & Dera Ghazi Khan chamber of Commerce & Industry, former Punjab caretaker Minister for Industry, renowned industrialist and Philanthropist while exchanging views with Senior Economic advisor Louie Dane and Mahesh Mishra, Counsellor and Group Head (Economic and Trade), British High Commission in Multan.
Khawaja Jalaluddin Roomi said that Pakistan and United Kingdom's bilateral trade ties are still below their actual potential which can be improved with strong mutual efforts of private sectors of both countries. He said that Pakistan is an attractive market for business & investment and stressed that the investors of the UK should come to Pakistan with technology transfer to capitalize on these opportunities. He emphasized for frequent exchange of trade delegations and participation in each other’s exhibitions to explore new areas of mutual cooperation between Pakistan and UK. He said that both countries are doing trade in limited items and they should focus on diversification of trade to achieve better results. He also highlighted the opportunities of Joint Ventures and investment in South Punjab as it has a potential to grow.
Khawaja Jalaluddin Roomi said that British Government should simplify the procedure of issuance of visas for students , skilled persons, industrialists, traders and scholars. He said that conditions for visa seekers must be relaxed so that people could go to the UK for higher education ,latest technology and consult for a better business environment . South Punjab is known in the World for its good quality mangoes, Cotton and Kinnow and other produces and by products . in particular is known as an important region in terms of agriculture in the whole world because the value added products related to fruits and vegetables can be worked here. Communication has not only become easier through it, but the business is expanding day by day through it. In this regard, Britain should provide Pakistan with the facilities that can help the people here to face the economic crisis.
Senior Economic advisor Louie Dane said that the UK was uniquely placed to support Pakistan in transforming its economy. He said that the UK is also 3rd largest investor in Pakistan and more investors want to explore Pakistan for JVs and investment. He said that around 1.6 million Pakistanis living in the UK are sending remittances of about USD 4.5 billion and providing important support to Pakistan’s economy. He said that the UK has placed Pakistan in the “Enhanced Framework” to provide the same level of market access (preferential tariffs) for exports to the UK as were available to it under the EU’s GSP Plus scheme. He highlighted the UK’s development support to Pakistan in cooperation with the World Bank Group and Asian Development Bank for its economic reform programmes. He said that he would love to work with the private sector of Pakistan to further promote bilateral trade ties between the two countries.
Senior Economic advisor Louie Dane and Mahesh Mishra, Counsellor and Group Head (Economic and Trade), British High Commission were highly impressed with the services of Jalaluddin Roomi foundation in South Punjab and remoted areas.They eulogized Khawaja Jalaluddin Roomi for doing work round the clock for the betterment upliftment of down trodden people. They said that It is a good step that Jalauddin Roomi foundation was providing books, uniform and educational facilities to the thousands of needy students.They also appreciated the clean-water project in different areas where subsoil water is brackish. Roomi offered useful suggestions to improve bilateral trade and economic relations between Pakistan and UK. He urged for enhancing cooperation in marble & granite, pharmaceutical, steel, textiles, tourism, aviation and other sectors to further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
