Six Indian Tibetan Border Police(ITBP) personnel and a policeman died while 32 others -- who were returning from Amarnath Yatra duty -- sustained injuries on Tuesday when a bus fell in deep gorge in Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said.
The 37 ITBP personnel and two from the JKP were being de-inducted from the Amarnath Yatra duty that concluded on August 11, a senior officer said.An ITBP spokesperson said in Delhi that, "A bus carrying 39 personnel fell down into a roadside river bed after its brakes reportedly failed. The troops were on their way from Chandanwari to Pahalgam. Casualties are feared and more details are awaited." A Border Security Force (BSF) helicopter has been pressed to airlift the casualties, officials said.
In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, at least six Indian troops and a police cop died while 33 others were injured in an accident in south Kashmir Islamabad district.
Seven personnel were killed and 33 others were critically injured when a bus, they were travelling in, fell into a deep gorge in Pahalgam area of the district, an official said.
The bus carrying 37 Indian Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel and two policemen fell into the gorge between Chandanwari and Pahalgam, a police official said. He said while six ITBP personnel died on the spot, 10 others sustained grievous injuries.
Twenty-five ITBP personnel and two policemen were also injured in the accident.
The bus was on its way from Chandanwari to police control room Srinagar.
Police said on Twitter the injured were being flown to an army hospital in the Himalayan region's main city of Srinagar, some 90km (55 miles) from the accident site in Anantnag district.
A police officer told Reuters that 35 people survived the crash but some were badly injured.
The bus was carrying members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, a federal force specialising in high-altitude operations, mainly on the Indo-China border.
Pictures from the site showed mangled remains of the bus by a fast-flowing river.
