British Airways to axe 10,300 more flights until the end of October

British Airways on Wednesday axed another 10,300 short-haul flights through the end of October, with the aviation sector battling staff shortages and booming demand as the pandemic recedes.

"The whole aviation industry continues to face into significant challenges and we're completely focussed on building resilience into our operation to give customers the certainty they deserve," the airline said in a statement, having already announced hundreds of flight cancellations this summer.

Long-haul flights currently remain unaffected by the cancellations. The latest cancellations mark another massive blow for British holidaymakers. British Airways cancelled hundreds of flights earlier this week.

The UK's flag carrier cancelled almost 1,000 flights due to take off in July.

The move has disrupted summer holiday plans for more than 100,000 passengers.

The airline has been hit by post-pandemic staff shortages which have caused disruption for passengers this year.

British Airways told Sky News that the cancellations it was announcing today covering August to October, were part of a focus on protecting popular holiday flights.

The airline suggested that destinations with weaker bookings would be the most likely to have the frequency of flights consolidated.

British Airways said in a statement: “The whole aviation industry continues to face into significant challenges and we're completely focussed on building resilience into our operation to give customers the certainty they deserve.

“The Government recently decided to give the whole industry slot alleviation to minimise potential disruption this summer.

“While taking further action is not where we wanted to be, it's the right thing to do for our customers and our colleagues.
