Bahawalpur, June 04, 2022: Humans and livestock have been fighting for life in drought hit areas of Cholistan due to acute shortage of water. Lack of rains has killed several cattle, including sheep, goats and cows in Cholistan. According to the report of 'Global Land Outlook', Pakistan is included in the list of 23 famine-stricken countries. Pakistan has been facing a state of emergency for the last two years from 2020 to 2022.
On the directives of Chief Minister Punjab Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, District Administration Bahawalpur taken effective measure to save the human and animal population in affected areas of Channan Pir and Garkhan in Cholistan. Furthermore, district administration has also made arrangements for shifting of animal and human populations from Cholistan to nearest areas where water is available.
Bahawalpur Commissioner retired Capt Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said that relief base camps have also been set up at 11 places under the supervision of Assistant Commissioners wherein medical aid and medicine are being provided to the locals and livestock by expert doctors and paramedical staff. Ambulances are also available to deal with any emergency situation.
Bahawalpur Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathiya said that tankers were operating round the clock ensure the availability of water in Cholistan areas of Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan districts. He said that relief operation was launched by district administration Bahawalpur that would be led by concerned ACs who would be responsible for organizing base camps in deserts in their respective jurisdictions. He further said that district administration would soon launch a development program for uplifting of deprived areas.
