An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck Bukidnon province in the southern Philippines Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The institute said the quake, which struck at 22:38 local time (14:38 GMT), hit 9 km northwest of Kadingilan town with a depth of 8 km.
The tremor was also felt in neighboring cities and South Cotabato province on Mindanao island.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire". The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has downgraded the magnitude of the earthquake felt in Kadingilan in Bukidnon to 5.7.
The earthquake that occurred 10:38 p.m. on Monday previously had a magnitude of 5.9.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told CNN Philippines' New Day on Tuesday that at least 119 aftershocks were recorded, with the highest at magnitude 5.2 as of Tuesday morning.
"Essentially this will still be followed by other aftershocks," Solidum said, "This is a common event. Aftershocks would really follow strong earthquakes."
He added that aftershocks will likely persist within a day or two.Minor damage was also recorded in Kadingilan which was under Intensity VI (very strong shaking). Other intensities were recorded in the following areas:
Intensity V (strong shaking) - Damulog and Don Carlos, Bukidnon; Wao, Lanao del Sur
