Two Gujrat Sisters undergo sex-change surgery in Islamabad

Two girls, both sisters, who underwent sex-reassignment surgeries have been discharged after recovering from the successful procedure.

Professor Dr Amjad Chaudhry at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) said that the two sisters, who hail from Gujrat and have seven other sisters, were born with physical deformities. He added that a medical examination had found that they suffered from atypical genitalia condition and that they had to undergo sex-reassignment surgery to change their gender and make them males.

After counselling the family, one sister underwent the procedure on September 9. A month later, the second sister went under the knife on October 9.

Dr Chaudhry said that the two were in healthy condition and after recovering, they were discharged. He added that their family was also happy after the operations.

ccording to Surgery Encyclopaedia, “Also known as sex change or gender reassignment surgery, sex reassignment surgery is a procedure that changes genital organs from one gender to another.”

Then comes the purpose as there are two main reasons to alter the organs from one sex to another.

Firstly, newborns with intersex deformities must early on be assigned to one sex or the other. These deformities represent intermediate stages between the primordial female genitals and the change into male genitals caused by male hormone stimulation.

And secondly, both men and women occasionally believe they are physically a different sex than they are mentally and emotionally. This dissonance is so profound that they are willing to be surgically altered.

In both cases, technical considerations favor successful conversion to a female rather than a male. Newborns with ambiguous organs will almost always be assigned to the female gender unless the penis is at least an inch long. Whatever their chromosomes, they are much more likely to be socially well adjusted as females, even if they cannot have children.

The Surgery Encyclopaedia says it is difficult to obtain reliable statistics about demographics. “Many sexual reassignment procedures are conducted in private facilities that are not subject to reporting requirements. Sexual reassignment surgery is often conducted outside of the United States.”

“The number of gender reassignment procedures conducted in the United States each year is estimated at between 100 and 500. The number worldwide is estimated to be two to five times larger.”
