A heavy rock of marble suddenly broken down and trapped the labourers working at the site underneath, said the officials of Rescue 1122.
Soon after the incident, both police and rescue officials, along with the local residents, rushed to the spot and started rescue and relief works. They recovered 14 labourers trapped under the rubble. However, 12 could not survive the incident with five also sustaining serious injuries.
The bodies and injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital Daggar.
On-duty doctors confirmed that out of the five injured four were in critical condition while one received minor injuries. The four critically injured were later shifted to Peshawar in Rescue 1122 ambulances.
Three rescue vehicles along with as many ambulances also reached on the spot and started rescue operation to recover the remaining workers trapped under the rubble.
Several vehicles, which were also trapped under heavy rocks, caught fire due to battery explosions.
K-P Chief Minister Mehmood Khan, taking notice of the incident, directed one of his aides, Riyaz Khan to visit the site at the earliest.
“We stand with the affected families in this hour of grief,” he said in a statement. The chief minister also directed the officials concerned to expedite the rescue efforts and use all resources available to ensure swift recovery of those still trapped in the rubble.
The rescue efforts continued till the filing of this report.
