    Nearly 2000 Pakistanis languishing in Iranian jails Share:

    The Upper House was informed on Thursday that around 2000 Pakistani nationals were languishing in different jails of Iran.Senator Rehman Malik said that the government would have to take measures for the release of the Pakistani prisoners.and this issue must be raised during the talk with Iranian Foreign Minister visiting Pakistan
    The issue was raised by Senator Rehman Malik in the Upper House. He informed the House that most of them were death row prisoners. However, the Iran government has passed a new bill, forgiving death penalty. According to details, as many as 2,000 Pakistanis are languishing in different jails in Iran. The sources said that due to complications in the implementation of new laws, they could not return to their country.
    The Upper House was further told that local assistance was being provided to them. Malik said that if the Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes up the issue with Iran’s foreign minister during his upcoming visit to Pakistan, these prisoners can be released.
    Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan informed the Upper House that the ministry can talk to the Iranian foreign minister but cannot put pressure upon them in this regard.  He said we will have to see the nature of crime first. Awan said that the government will talk to the visiting foreign minister on the request of Rehman Malik.
    It is pertinent to mention here that the Pakistani prisoners were spending death sentence. However, the government of Iran has signed a bill to forgive the death sentence and Pakistani prisoners need legal assistance.
