Political worker Qari Syed Alam shot dead in Peshawar

Violence continued to mar elections as a spokesperson for a former member parliament representing Khyber Agency was gunned down in Peshawar on Thursday.
Qari Syed Alam spokesperson for former MNA Shahjee Gul Afridi, was killed and another passerby injured when unidentified suspects opened fire at Alam’s car in Peshawar’s Board Bazaar, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police told The Express Tribune. The injured, Tayab, was moved to Hayatabad Medical Complex for medical aid.
Alam is reportedly a close aide of Afridi, who is contesting upcoming polls from NA-43. “Initial investigation revealed the deceased had no personal enmity,” said police. The attackers managed to escape after the incident.
Last week, the house of another candidate from Khyber District, Maroof Khan came under attacked. K-P police had ruled out the incident as an extortion case.
Earlier this week, Awami National Party (ANP) leader Haroon Bilour was assassinated in a suicide attack at a corner meeting that killed 19 others and injured over 60 people.
The attacker detonated his explosive belt close to the ANP leader’s vehicle as he approached a rally organised to promote his election in the Yakatoot area of the provincial capital late Tuesday night. Rescue teams and security officials shifted the deceased and injured to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) soon after the attack.
One of the injured, 25-year-old Muhammad Adil breathed early Thursday morning. At least five critically wounded are receiving treatment at the LRH.
