    Over 18 dead and dozens trapped as flyover collapses in holiday hotspot

    Eighteen people are dead and 30 others are feared trapped under the rubble after part of an under-construction flyover in the northern Indian city of Varanasi collapsed on Tuesday, a senior police official said.


    Varanasi, the constituency of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is in India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh and is popular among pilgrims and tourists.
    Modi said on Twitter he was “extremely saddened” by the loss of lives and had asked officials in the state to provide all possible support to those affected.A 20-metre beam being fitted to the flyover collapsed, crushing vehicles and pedestrians.Seven cranes have been sent to lift the beam and the army have been called.The disaster happened in the city of Varanasi in the Indian province of Uttar Pradesh.Official Amit Kumar said an investigation into the incident was ongoing but no arrests have been made so far. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — who represents the constituency where the tragedy happened, said he was "extremely saddened" by the loss of lives and has asked state officials to provide all possible support to those affected.
    "Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi," Modi tweeted.
    "I pray that the injured recover soon. Spoke to officials and asked them to ensure all possible support to those affected."
