One killed as protest erupts in Karachi over rape, killing of minor

One individual was killed and another twelve injured on Tuesday in Karachi as police attacked Orangi Town residents staging a demonstration against the rape and killing of a six-year-old girl.
Abdul Rehman died after police fired at the protesters. The injured, including a DSP and nine other policemen have been taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. A contingent of Rangers personnel has arrived on the spot following a police request for assistance.
Police resorted to baton charge and aerial firing, according to initial reports. As relatives of the deceased blocked a road near Katti Pahari, a police team arrived on the spot to hold talks. Police personnel attacked the protesters after being pelted with stones.
The protest has brought traffic to a halt in the area. Alternative routes remain open, police said.
Relatives of the deceased took to the streets to protest police incompetence. They say that they will bury minor’s body at this very spot. The minor was killed after being raped, initial medical reports suggested.
A Karachi police spokesperson said the body of the deceased had been recovered from a deserted spot near the Northern Bypass late on Monday. Station House Officer (SHO) Haji Sanaullah confirmed the victim’s body bore marks of torture. He said the body had been sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy.
The police officials on Tuesday arrested two out of three suspects mentioned by the minor’s parents.
The Orangi Town resident went missing on April 15. The family is said to have contacted police on this account. Authorities failed to alert relatives of the deceased after recovering a body, it has been claimed.
The Sindh IG has taken notice of the incident and directed District West police to present a report.
