Speaking to protesters in Karachi, religious leaders and scholars appeared to be of common view that Mr Trump’s threatening statement was an attempt to cover his country’s defeat in Afghanistan.
Difa-e-Pakistan Council organised a demonstration at the Numaish traffic intersection where dozens of activists raised slogans against President Trump and burnt his effigy. They also called for withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.
In a strong reaction, Majlis-i-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) leader Allama Mukhtar Imami announced a series of protests across the country against President Trump and his country, warning that any misadventure by the US targeting Pakistan could lead to its own destruction.
Anti-Trump demonstrations were also held in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Tharparkar, Thatta, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kandhkot-Kashmore, Larkana and several other districtrits.
SUKKUR: JUI-F Senator Hafiz Hamdullah, in a meeting with party colleagues Mufti Azam Mahar and Qari Mohammed Farooq Shaikh here on Tuesday said that the US had been realising and recognising the unparalleled sacrifices offered by Pakistan throughout the long war on terrorism but it was shocking to see that the incumbent president had overlooked facts and the history.
Senator Hamdullah called on the two leaders after arriving here from Meero Khan for his onward journey to Islamabad. He advised Islamabad to stop seeking any aid from Washington as Pakistan no more needed such assistance. He also criticised the federal government for its flawed policies due to which, according to him, “cowards are threatening us”.
He claimed that the US would have met the same fate as the USSR did had Pakistan not fought the war on terrorism. He was of the view said that the US wanted to make India stronger in the region after failing to weaken Pakistan. He lauded the Pakistan army for successfully neutralising all conspiracies to weaken the country.
“The US or any other foreign power must think twice before making any attempt to violate Pakistan’s geographical boundaries ... we are strong enough to defend ourselves ... we are a nuclear power,” said the JUI-F leader.
JUI-F Sindh general secretary Maulana Rashid Mehmood, speaking to party workers at Sukkur airport before leaving for Karachi on Tuesday, remarked that Donald Trump had gone mad. “We [Pakistan] are not afraid of his threats”, he added.
The Maulana said that Pakistan had suffered a loss of 60,000 lives as well as financial loss of millions of dollars in the US-sponsored war on terrorism that continued for 15 years. Nobody could tell Pakistan to do more, he said, adding that the country did not need US aid any more either.
Observing that the US threat was part of a conspiracy against Pakistan, Maulana Rashid said that the whole nation stood behind its armed forces in the face of any aggression. “We are fully capable to foil such conspiracies,” he said.
He said it was very sad to see the US forgetting the great sacrifices rendered by Pakistan for the cause of peace in the region and around the world by fighting against foreign intervention and terrorism. “This is intolerable and unacceptable,” he said.
He recalled that his party had 15 years ago expressed the fear of US deceiving Pakistan, and said Trump’s tirade and US policy shift proved it [the fear] correct.
