Newly-appointed Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Corps Headquarters Peshawar and North Wazirastan Agency, Inter-Services Public Relations said Wednesday.
According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing here, General Bajwa reiterated his resolve to take war on terror to its logical conclusion. The army chief was also given detailed briefing about prevailing security situation in Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Malakand and progress on return of temporarily displaced persons (TDPs).
General Bajwa, who assumed charge as the 16th Chief of Army Staff, said Tuesday situation along the tense Line of Control (LoC) would improve.
The 57-year-old replaced Raheel Sharif, who became the first army chief in more than 20 years to step down on time, as Pakistan Army’s top commander. Several previous military leaders had obtained extensions to their three-year terms.
One cabinet minister told Reuters that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif picked Bajwabecause of his low-key style, and felt the incoming general would be more willing to cede control of key areas to the civilian government.
"He is essentially a very low-profile person and after our last experience (with General Sharif) this is just a very important consideration; someone who doesn’t want the limelight at all," said the minister, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.
